Grade 1
Vocabulary Building Worksheets
Lessons 1-36 provide you with important worksheets to assist in reaching mastery of the 340 reading words designated as "mandatory" reading vocabulary for 1st Grade. Each "Lesson" covers 10 new vocabulary words and typically requires 1 week to attain mastery with Grade 1 students. Words have been arranged from the "Most Common" at the beginning Lessons to the "Lesser Common" toward the end, thereby providing you the most logical and efficient order for instruction throughout the year. Exercises include "Recognition Memory" testing - "Scrambled Letters" - and "Sentence Writing Practice." | Sentence writing for Lessons 1-9 is typically too difficult for 1st Grade students so we devised a special word matching activity to gain familiarity with the new words. Click "ws-1" below to bring up the activity worksheet for the first 5 words to be taught Monday and Tuesday. Click "ws-2" for the activity worksheet to teach the 5 Wednesday and Thursday words. The "Friday Test" is linked below each Lesson and should be given at the end of the week to further solidify memorization of the vocabulary words. |

Vocabulary words in each lesson are organized according to important vowel sounds and reading rules for maximum learning rate according to NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.. For example, Lesson 3 contains the "most common" "short a" words found in early reading books. When Should a Child have these Words Memorized? The first 12 Lessons comprise the "VERY HIGH FREQUENCY" 100 reading words and should be completely memorized by Christmas of Grade One. Failure to achieve this goal will result in a serious delay in progress as the words (and sounds) are critical for comprehension of sentences and paragraphs in early reading books. Lessons 13-30 should be memorized prior to administration of Grade 1 standardized tests, (such as the SAT) which is given to many students nationally in the spring.
